US “ready to embrace peace”, will impose new sanctions on Iran.

In his first televised address to the nation after Iran’s attack on US military bases, US President Donald Trump stated that “ Iran appears to be standing down” and that his administration would impose new sanctions on Iran.

In an attempt to de-escalate US-Iran tensions, Trump signaled that he would not retaliate militarily.

“The fact that we have this great military and equipment, however, does not mean we have to use it. We do not want to use it. American strength, both military and economic, is the best deterrent,” Trump said.

The Pentagon said Iran had launched 16 short-range ballistic missiles, at least 11 of which hit Iraq’s al-Asad air base and one of which hit a facility in Erbil. None are reported to have caused any major damage.

No Americans were hurt in the overnight attacks on US military bases.

New Iranian sanctions

Trump announced that the US would immediately impose “powerful” new sanctions until “Iran changes its behavior”. It was not clear what the new sanctions would consist of.
